Sweet potato Thanksgiving recipe for glowing skin

We all know that eating a healthy diet is just as important to skin health as a good skin care routine.  They go hand in hand.  With Thanksgiving just around the corner I did a little breakdown of some popular food items at Thanksgiving and how it relates to your skin.  Plus, if you scroll down there is delicious skin loving recipe with Sweet Potatoes from the lovely blog JoyFoodSunshine.  Sweet potatoes are probably the most nutritious item on your Thanksgiving menu.  

Thanksgiving foods that are beneficial to the skin:

  • Turkey- contains protein which is an essential component to skin health and encourages collagen production
  • cranberries- contain vitamin C which is a antioxidant
  • green beans- packed with antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin K and manganese
  • sweet potatoes- full of Vitamin A, Beta Carotene, Potassium, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C
  • almond & walnuts- high levels of Vitamin E and other fat soluable vitamins that help reduce inflammation
  • spinach and greens-nutrient dense

Thanksgiving foods that are the worst for your skin:

  • baked goods- those high in sugar and white flour, can damage collagen and elastin in the skin, trigger acne breakouts, and lead to a dull skin appearance.
  • salty foods-can cause fluid retention which can make eyes look puffy
  • creamy cheese dips- full of dairy which in some people leads to acne breakouts
  • cornbread-high in sugar which can make the skin breakout
  • stuffing- high in sodium which contributes to inflammation

Cinnamon Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Apples

This Cinnamon Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Apples Recipe is a healthy and easy side dish that is perfect for Thanksgiving! These crispy roasted sweet potato cubes and tangy apples are made with only 6 ingredients and are paleo, vegan, gluten-free & dairy-free!

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes 4 cups, cut into 1” cubes
  • 2 medium apples about 2 cups, cut into 1” cubes
  • 3 TBS coconut oil melted & divided
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 TBS pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  • Grease a large baking pan, set aside.
  • In a large bowl, toss cubed sweet potatoes with 2 TBS of melted coconut oil. Stir until coated.
  • Add sea salt and stir until evenly distributed.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 min, stirring halfway through, until sweet potatoes just barely start to brown.
  • While the sweet potatoes are baking: stir the remaining 1 TBS of coconut oil into the apples. Add maple syrup and cinnamon and stir to combined.
  • After 20 minutes, or the sweet potatoes have begun to brown, remove the sweet potatoes from oven and add the apple mixture and stir to combine.
  • Return to the oven and bake for 20 more minutes, stirring halfway through.
  • Once the sweet potatoes and apples are browned and the maple syrup has caramelized on them remove them from the oven and serve immediately!
